Current Role & Experience

Dr. Laura Twomey is a lecturer on the BA in Sports Management and Coaching in the School of Global Business at TU Dublin.  Laura is an experienced educator, having held teaching positions in second level, further education, and third level education sectors. 

Laura graduated from DCU with a first-class honour’s degree in Physical Education and Biology.  After successfully securing funding from the Irish Research Council, she then began her PhD studies in Cardiovascular Health in DCU. On completion of her PhD, she took on a postdoctoral role in conjunction with Enterprise Ireland and DCU, investigating the effect of the Oriel Sea Mineral Complex in inflammation. Laura has multidisciplinary research interests in physiology, sports coaching, and physical activity.

Laura currently delivers several undergraduate modules including Anatomy & Physiology, Adapted Physical Activity, Elite Coaching and Coaching Children. She has also taught Skills for Success and Research Methods.

Laura has extensive teaching experience in the field of sports science and coaching across varying education sectors. Prior to working in TU Dublin, she lectured in Dublin City University (DCU), Colaiste Dhulaigh College of further Education (CDCFE) and taught in Manor House Secondary School.

Laura is currently supervising one PhD student in the field of sports coaching and reflective practise and is co-supervisor to another student investigating patterns of play in Ladies Gaelic Football. She is open to receiving contact from prospective postgraduate students interested in pursuing master's or PhD studies. Laura has supervised many undergraduate students in the field of physical education, coaching and sports science. She is an annual academic mentor to TU Dublin Sports students.

Laura has multidisciplinary research interests which lie in physiology, coaching, cardiovascular health. She is also interested in research regarding the development of teaching & learning and is currently undertaking a transformative educator course.

Prior to her lecturing career, Laura taught in further education and second level. She also spent 6 months as the National coordinator for the Be Active programme with Meath Local Sports Partnership. She has over 15 years’ experience in camogie coaching and was an ambassador for Irelands two-year initiative (20x20) to promote female sport. This included delivering seminars and workshops around the country promoting the importance of participation, attendance, and media coverage of female sport.  She has a keen interest in camogie and was former chairperson of DCU camogie club and captain of the Dublin Senior Camogie team.
