Technology Integration Models

Taking a Digital by Design approach means that on a planned, ongoing and consistent basis over the duration of the module, learning technologies are intentionally and thoughtfully combined with pedagogical principles and practices to enhance and transform the teaching, learning and assessment experiences of the student. The technology is an integral aspect of the activity meaning that the activity would be difficult, or even impossible, without the integration of that technology. These kinds of planned technology-enabled activities engage students and encourage them to create and develop new thinking processes.

Simple Technology Integration Models such as SAMR and PICRAT can help guide us as we review learning activities and intentionally integrate technologies. Each model has a slightly different focus: SAMR focuses on how technology transforms teaching practices while PICRAT is concerned with how technology transforms student engagement. Both models are valuable and have a role to play. Which we use may depend on the context of our class and what we are trying to achieve with the learning activities in question.
