Book Launch: Spadges, Grey Pates and Mules: The Dublin Bird Market
SCAFT lecturer Dr Mark Farrell's new book explores the story of Dublin’s historic Bird Market. Markets often reveal the character of a community—they engage our senses and bring people together through connection, communication, and exchange.
For centuries, the Dublin Bird Market has existed at the edges of Irish culture. Many have heard of it, but few know its exact location, and even fewer have experienced it firsthand. Operating with little formal structure or regulation, the market’s survival speaks to the dedication of its community.
In Ireland, birds have long held a place of respect and were rarely seen as food except in unusual circumstances. Through the story of the Bird Market, this book highlights the distinctive identity of the Irish people and their food traditions.
'Spadges, Grey Pates and Mules: The Dublin Bird Market' by Dr Mark Farrell, is launching at 7pm, Thursday 11th December at Donore Harriers Sports Centre, Chapelizod Road, D20 Y962.
