GenAI in Learning, Teaching and Assessment

Learning Teaching Assessment (LTA) supports a critical, responsible and pedagogically grounded approach to the use of GenAI in teaching, learning, and assessment. GenAI is defined by UNESCO as follows:

Generative AI (GenAI) is an artificial intelligence (AI) technology that automatically generates content in response to prompts written in natural-language conversational interfaces (...) The content can appear in formats that comprise all symbolic representations of human thinking: texts written in natural language, images (including photographs, digital paintings and cartoons), videos, music and software code.(UNESCO, 2023)

A woman sits at a laptop collaborating with a small robot who is reading from a bookAs GenAI tools have become more widely available, their ability to generate and transform different forms of content is creating new possibilities and challenges for education, while raising important questions about how students learn and how educators approach teaching and assessment. Key considerations include academic integrity, fairness and inclusion, transparency and student agency.

The use of AI and GenAI should be an informed and optional choice for both lecturers and students. This means recognising that not everyone will want or need to use these technologies. Where GenAI is used, its use should support learning and align with the values of the University, the needs of the discipline, and appropriate ethical considerations. It should not be assumed that GenAI is always the best or most appropriate tool.

When using Generative AI to support teaching, learning, feedback, or assessment, you should ensure that your practice aligns with the University's Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence. These guidelines, and the ethical principles that underpin them, should inform all decisions relating to the adoption and use of GenAI in educational contexts.

Microsoft Copilot Chat is available to all TU Dublin staff through our Microsoft 365 environment. As part of this environment, Copilot benefits from TU Dublin's existing security, privacy, and data protection controls. Prompts and responses remain within our Microsoft tenant and are not used to train public AI models. This enables staff to use Copilot confidently for tasks such as drafting, summarising, planning, and other day-to-day productivity activities. Importantly, where sensitive, confidential, personal, or University data is involved, Microsoft Copilot is the only approved generative AI tool for staff use.

Staff should use only approved AI tools when engaging with Generative AI for University-related activities. TU Dublin information, including personal data, student or staff records, contracts, research materials, and internal documents, should never be uploaded, pasted, or otherwise shared with external or public AI chatbot services. In all cases, when using GenAI for Teaching, Learning, or Assessment, academic staff should add an acknowledgement statement mentioning what, how, and for what this technology was used.  

An example of a Diligent GenAI Statement could be: 

In creating this [XXX], I used [XXXX] to [assist, develop, brainstorm, organise, etc...] for the purpose of [XXX]. I affirm that I worked on [XXX], and I used the tool for [XXX]. I affirm that I maintain full responsibility for the creation, editing, and final content. This disclosure is made in the spirit of transparency and acknowledges the role of GenAI in this intellectual work.
