Research Project Title/Topic:
The Psychological and Occupational Impact of Menstruation Symptoms
Dates:
January 2024 – Present
Collaborators/Team Members:Dr. Daire Hooper, School of Management, People and Organisations, Technological University Dublin
Sophia McCormack, Technological University Dublin
Description:
This research investigates how menstruation symptoms affect workplace outcomes including employee well-being, mood, energy levels, absenteeism, and interpersonal relationships. Despite the high prevalence of symptoms like dysmenorrhea (84.1%) and well-established links to mood disturbances, the occupational implications remain under-researched. The study aims to address this gap through empirical analysis grounded in Affective Events Theory and health psychology.
A quantitative survey (n = 150) was conducted and structural equation modelling was used to examine seven hypotheses concerning the psychological and occupational outcomes of menstrual symptoms. Fit indices for the analysis indicate support for the model (χ²(74) = 141.360, p = 0.000; CFI = 0.916; TLI = 0.881; RMSEA = 0.080 (90% CI [0.059, 0.099]); SRMR = 0.080).
Key findings highlight the mediating role of mood on well-being and workplace relationships and the predictive power of symptoms on absenteeism and energy levels.
Managerial implications:
The findings from this research point to a need for businesses to acknowledge menstruation openly and work towards its destigmatisation. It also highlights the need for the introduction of legislation that supports women and their menstrual health.
Funding:
This project is currently self-funded and part of an ongoing research trajectory aimed at enhancing diversity and inclusion practices in workplace health management.
Outcomes:
- Academic Publication:
A manuscript is currently being prepared for publication and will present full empirical findings, implications for HR policy, and evidence-based recommendations for menstrual-inclusive workplace practices.
- Research and Innovation Showcase 2025 Presentation:
