Silktide
We use the Silktide web governance platform to help us identify and fix problems across our web pages. Access to Silktide platform is open to all colleagues who manage or edit webpages on the TU Dublin website.
If you have any queries about using this platform, please email web@tudublin.ie.
What is Silktide?
Silktide helps us identify and resolve website issues. It highlights where problems occur on the page and explains how to resolve them. It improves content readability and accessibility, making our website more accessible for everyone.
Benefits:
- Ensures high quality, consistent, and accessible content across the website.
- Saves time by automating content and technical checks.
- Supports compliance with accessibility regulations and best practices.
- Helps prioritise issues by severity (e.g., red for critical/high priority problems).
Content
The content module identifies issues that can damage our credibility. It makes sure there are no broken links, typos, or grammatical errors. These errors can make it difficult for a user to understand our content and may even put users off.
Accessibility
Our webpages should be accessible to all users. This includes people with disabilities, with old or unusual technology, and slow internet access. The accessibility module validates our website against WCAG 2.1 A, AA and AAA standards, tests PDFs for accessibility, provides prioritised recommendations, and tests in both desktop and mobile browser sizes to ensure compliance with WCAG's mobile requirements.
1. Log In
Open Silktide and log in with your TU Dublin credentials.
2. Select your website section
3. Select ''content''
4. Select “Checks”
Navigate to Checks to identify issues on your pages.
5. Identify Red / High Priority Content Issues
In the first 'automated checks' tab Silktide flags critical content problems in red—we would advise to address these first.
Examples of red/high priority content issues:
- Spelling or grammar errors
- Broken links
6. How to review and correct flagged errors in Terminal Four
- Click on the name beside each red exclamation mark to view detailed information about the flagged issue. This will provide guidance on what needs to be corrected
- Select the “Pages” tab to display the list of pages within your section
- Click on the URL of the relevant page to open it in the Inspector View
- Review the flagged issues, which are highlighted in red within the Inspector View. The Inspector View allows you to inspect a single webpage in detail and to edit the issue in Terminal Four
- Click on the 'CMS' button on the top right corner to open and edit the issue in Terminal Four

- If necessary, add comments in the “Discuss” tab to provide updates or additional context regarding the issue. You can also tag a member of your team that also has access to Terminal Four.
- To move to the next page, click the arrow at the top of the screen and continue reviewing any remaining issues
- Publish: When you have completed the updates in Terminal Four ensure you scroll up to the top of the page and click on the green 'publish ' button
- Click the Learn button to add proper nouns, surnames Gaelige or other valid words to the dictionary so they are no longer flagged as errors

Silktide delivered live training for our editor community covering aspects of Silktide platform. These sessions help bring the platform to life and supplement the modules available in the Silktide Training Academy.
We recommend putting aside some time to watch this session.
You can also test your webpage using the Silktide browser extension (available on Edge).
Note: The browser extension cannot be downloaded while you are logged into a tudublin.ie Google Workspace account. Please log out of that account before installing the extension.
The extension activates a toolbar that shows live page assessments directly on the TU Dublin website. This is especially useful for reviewing newly created pages before they are fully indexed.
There are 4 sections - Content, Accessibility, Marketing, and UX. CMS Editors should focus on the Content section, as it provides all the essential information you need without getting into technical details. It covers everything from broken links and misspellings to all our custom policies.

A number of useful simulator tools are also available such as the screen reader, impaired vision, colour blindness, and dyslexia checks.
At the bottom of the panel, you’ll see a dropdown menu with the option to preview the webpage on desktop, tablet, or mobile devices. This gives you a quick overview of how your webpage displays on different devices.
Academy
The Getting Started section in the academy includes on demand videos, full course paths, blog articles, and other resources to help you use Silktide to its fullest.
Help Centre
Silktide's help center offers quick access to help articles and chat support for any questions you have.

Silktide Content Score: A score from 0 to 100 that measures the overall quality of a website’s written content. It is based on automated checks such as spelling, grammar, broken links, readability, and page structure. A higher score means fewer issues and clearer, more user friendly content.
Checks: Automated tests that Silktide runs on your website to find issues and improvements. Each check looks for a specific problem (e.g., spelling, broken links, grammar) and contributes to your overall silktide content score.
Automated Check: A test Silktide runs automatically on your website (e.g. spelling errors, broken links). These checks contribute to the overall quality score, because they can be evaluated reliably without human judgment.
Assisted Check: A type of Silktide check that requires human review or judgment (For example, evaluating whether alt text is meaningful or content is appropriate). Assisted checks help identify issues but do not directly contribute to the overall quality score.
Policies: In Silktide, policies are custom rules administrators can create to automatically check your website for issues specific to TU Dublin. They let you enforce standards beyond Silktide’s built in checks (for example, banning certain words, requiring a disclaimer, or flagging outdated content).
Annotations: Annotations are custom tasks that can be created and assigned to users. You can use annotations to easily communicate required changes on your web pages with other team members. Annotations can be used to leave notes for yourself or for other editors, for example ''Double check this heading'' or ''This link needs updating next week''.
