Current Role, Activities and Interests

Dr. Daniel Tobin is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering. He teaches across a range of programmes, including TU822 Mechanical Engineering, TU823 Manufacturing & Design Engineering, and TU024 Engineering Reliability Management. His teaching covers key areas such as manufacturing technologies, design for manufacture, condition-based monitoring, CNC machining, and robotics. His expertise lies in integrated design and manufacturing, with a focus on digital and smart manufacturing systems, including Industry 4.0/5.0, automation and robotics, sensor-driven processes, and sustainable manufacturing. Daniel’s research interests centre on advanced manufacturing and materials engineering, including solid-state joining of automotive and aerospace-grade aluminium alloys and dynamic strain rate testing of materials. He also works in the areas of metal additive manufacturing of metamaterials and the optimisation of manufacturing processes through in-process sensing within digital manufacturing environments.

Industrial Background/Experience

Daniel Tobin has gained industry and research experience in materials engineering and engineering software applications, with work spanning material characterisation, additive manufacturing, and simulation-based analysis including multibody dynamics and impact testing.
