Marie Armstrong is a lecturer at Technological University Dublin on the Blanchardstown Campus, teaching across the Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Design, Technology & Innovation programmes. She holds an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College Dublin and has continued her professional development through postgraduate studies in Project Management, a Master’s in Information Technology, and a Higher Diploma in Arts in Teaching.

Marie brings over 25 years of industry experience, having worked in the electronics manufacturing sector and in the public service sector delivering IT services to local authorities. She project managed the full lifecycle development, testing, and implementation of a national Roads Management System and has worked within the national Local Government Data Centre, with a particular focus on the centralised payroll system for local authorities. This extensive practical experience informs her teaching, enabling her to integrate real-world industrial scenarios into the classroom.

Marie is actively involved in teaching, student engagement, and programme development, supporting learners throughout their academic journey. She is the Second Year Mechatronic Engineering Coordinator, Third Year Design, Technology & Innovation Programme Coordinator, and Work Placement Officer for the same cohort. In these roles, she has initiated new links with local industry, facilitating student placements and closely engaging with industry to stay aligned with their evolving industry developments and requirements.

She contributes to interdisciplinary education and is actively involved in initiatives that promote student entrepreneurship and collaboration. These include student project collaborations with New Frontiers entrepreneurs and cross-disciplinary projects between Digital Media and Design, Technology & Innovation students. She encourages participation in competitions such as the Bolton Trust, Enterprise Ireland Student Entrepreneur Awards, and initiatives such as iVenture. Marie also organises an annual funding pitch competition for final-year Design, Technology & Innovation students on their last day with external industry judges.

Marie has a strong interest in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), with a particular focus on supporting gender minorities in STEM. She is an active member of WITU (Women in Technology United), a pan-university network that hosts annual meet-and-greet events for incoming students, International Women’s Day events, and related initiatives.

She has contributed to academic research, co-authoring and presenting a practice paper titled “Supporting Women in Engineering & Technology through a Collaborative Practice and Support Network Using Targeted Interventions” at the SEFI 2023 conference.

Marie is also actively engaged in outreach and professional activities, supporting engineering education initiatives in local schools through Engineers Ireland programmes such as STEPS Young Engineers Awards for primary schools, Engineer Your Future for Transition Year students, and participation in Engineering Week events.

Outside of her professional work, Marie has a strong interest in creativity and community engagement, contributing to local art projects and painting initiatives.
