Current Role, Activities and Interests
Tom lectures on the apprenticeship MAMF (Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting) programme, delivering modules in Engineering Science, Plant and Machine Diagnostics, Communications, and Integrated Manufacturing. He also lectures on the OPMN4111 Manufacturing Operations Management module. In addition, Tom contributes to the TU024 Reliability and Maintenance Management programme, where he delivers content in Instrumentation, GMP for Cleanroom Environments, and Maintenance and Asset Management. Tom Finn is currently undertaking a PhD focused on the design of Lean-aligned planning systems to enhance long-term organisational focus and strategy execution. His research sits at the intersection of operational excellence, strategic management, and continuous improvement, with a particular emphasis on how organisations can better align daily activities with long-term objectives. Through this work, he is developing practical frameworks that bridge theory and application, supporting more effective strategy deployment in complex organisational environments.
Industrial Background/Experience
Tom has over 20 years of industrial experience across the pharmaceutical and food sectors, working with multinational organisations. Throughout his career, he has operated across a range of engineering and operational roles within highly regulated manufacturing environments, with exposure to production, maintenance, and continuous improvement functions. His experience spans large-scale manufacturing operations where quality, compliance, and performance are critical, giving him a strong foundation in how complex industrial systems operate and are continuously improved.
