English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency as detailed on our website. Applicants for this course should have a minimum IELTS (Academic Version) English Proficiency of 7 overall (or equivalent) with nothing less than 6 in each component.

Film & Broadcasting is about telling stories - whether fiction or factual. This course combines high standards of training in production skills to make courses, dramas and documentaries for radio, television and cinema with a well-grounded academic education in media theory and contextual studies.

Film and Broadcasting require both passion and discipline. The best films, documentaries and radio features come from students who are interested in the wider world, who have an awareness of current affairs and the socio-political forces that shape society. Potential students should be curious and open, displaying an eagerness to learn and to understand people, systems of all kinds and their historical contexts.

While the core focus is on traditional media, you will also study new media forms, which require all of the traditional skillsets and are really about delivering stories in different formats or supporting traditional storytelling (e.g. a TV programme) in different ways.

This course’s strength lies in the integrated approach to theory and practice. You will develop a critical and reflective understanding of a wide range of subject areas that both inform and underpin content development. It is this blend that continues to attract potential employers to our graduates. It also supports a broad range of career possibilities.

We aim to develop creative, socially aware practitioners who have deep disciplinary knowledge, can think critically, who are flexible and show a strong professional ethos.

Modules include Media Theory, Film Studies, Cultural Studies, Television, Online Production, Drama, Documentary, Radio Production, Media Management and Audio.

Film & Broadcasting is a well-rounded courses. It allowed me to understand both the practical aspects of film production, and the theoretical elements that support it. What has been particularly valuable for me is the strong alumni network actively working in the industry both at home and abroad

What was great about studying Film & Broadcasting was the balance of theory and practice. My time at TU Dublin really helped shape the path I wanted to follow…My curiosity in documentary was well nurtured and, with the support of the lecturers, I was able to make my final-year project and go on to win the Next Generation category at the Guth Gafa International Film Festival.

The four years I spent at TU Dublin not only gave me the confidence to believe I could be a successful director, but also gave me the skills to compete amongst the best in the industry. I’m now a freelance director, passionate about telling stories with a social purpose. My latest BBC documentary has just been nominated for a UK Broadcast Award for Best Single Documentary.

On graduation, you may proceed to postgraduate studies leading to the award of MA, MPhil or PhD at research institutes and universities worldwide.
